How to move a City - The importance of involving residents and listening to their needsCommunity design, Urban planningThroughout the course of history, we have seen migrations all over the world. Often affecting the development dramatically. Even today, people and entire communities are forced to move. The reasons can be different: Everything from climate change, earthquakes, water regulations or war. Or as in Gällivare-Malmberget - the expansion of the mining industry. Back in 2009, six groups of students, academics, professors, consultants and experienced professionals from ‘co-design’ and multi-faceted fields and skill sets, came together and collaborated to address this local problem with global significance. By using modern design methods, visions and solutions were developed for a positive, safe and societal transformation with the participation of residents, prior to the relocation of the Malmberget district and future of Gällivare. The overall ambition was to bring a better quality of life for all of those affected. The project was funded through the EU Regional Development Fund, and run by SVID (Swedish Industrial Design Foundation), in collaboration with Gällivare Municipality, LKAB, Swedish Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, The County Administrative Board of Norrbotten, and ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Designers / WDO - World Design Organization).Daniel from Design Nation was selected as designer into the multi disciplinary team of competences from twenty countries.
