Austurland - a destination by the community for the communityAusturland is the Icelandic name for East Iceland. Destination Austurland(Áfangastaðurinn Austurland) started in late 2014 after an initiative taken by FAUST – Ferðamálasamtök Austurlands (Tourism Association of Austurland). The project is characterized by sustainable and regenerative perspectives; culturally, economically, socially and ecologically. The Austurland Destination Management Organization established is managed and run by Austurbrú, the regional development agency who represents development of the economy, society, administration, college and continuous education, research, knowledge and culture in Austurland. The development of Destination Austurland early started to focus on well-being of residents and flourishing communities, aiming to strengthening the attractiveness and competitiveness of the destination through a truly regenerative approach. The model of building a Regional Destination Management Organization soon became the role model for Icelandic regions, when planning and managing tourism.Destination Austurland is one of the best existing examples showing the potential working with Destination Design as a development model. Austurland has been highlighted as an inspiring initiative and demonstrator not only in Iceland, but also on globally.
